Too Much Rain Hurting Some Small Farms

Lexington just finished its third wettest August on record which followed an abnormally dry first half of the summer in some parts of the state.

The extremes are hurting some farmers in the wallet.

Farmers usually pray for rain but one small tobacco farm in Bourbon County has gotten five inches of rain just in the past week.

Farmers said it has been great for the cows but they said the ground is too muddy to harvest the tobacco.
Jeff Carter has a one-man operation on his farm.

He said he was a little worried about the drought back in June but he said he knew his crops would pull through.
Now without extra help, all the rain could start hurting his profits.

“It’s been so wet and so muddy,” said Carter.  “We don’t grow a whole lot of tobacco, we don’t want to take the chance of getting the tobacco muddy and losing some quality so here it stands and we’re waiting.”

Carter said he could lose two to three cents per pound of tobacco.

“When you’re talking tobacco is in the two dollar range and you start knocking three cents off of that for quality, you’re going to get hurt pretty quick,” said Carter.
