Thursday marks 50th anniversary of 18 year old’s right to vote
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Secretary of State Michael Adams is commemorating Thursday the 50th anniversary of ratification of the 26th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
The Amendment provided that “[t]he right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.”
“If you’re old enough to serve our country in uniform, you’re old enough to vote,” Adams said. “If you’re 18 and not registered to vote, please register at govoteky.com.”
Following the recent enactment of historic election reform in Kentucky, Adams noted this progress does not mark the first time Kentucky has led other states in expanding voting rights. In 1955, Kentucky voters approved an amendment to our state constitution to allow 18-year-olds to vote, making ours only the second state to do so.
