Threat prompts low attendance at Louisville school district

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – An anonymous, vague threat to an educational institution has drastically lowered one-day attendance at the largest school district in Kentucky.

Jefferson County Public Schools reported about 46 percent attendance on Friday, two days after a threat was called in to Louisville police about an unspecified educational institution. The district has about 100,000 students, and attendance is typically 93 percent.

The Courier-Journal reports the district, with 155 schools, notified parents and the media Thursday through texts, letters and other communication.

Superintendent Donna Hargens says she expects security precautions to return to normal Monday morning.

Police said that though it was unclear from the threat even “whether these are institutions located in Louisville,” police opted to notify schools and colleges in the area.
