Thousands of UK students start moving in

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)-About 2,100 students descended upon downtown Lexington today from far and wide, where many for the next four years will call UK there home away from home.

We caught up with students around the university’s two new residence halls, Boyd and Holmes Gall, along the Avenue of champions. The 1,100 students living there will be the first ones to sleep tonight in the $84 million facilities paid for by UK’s private partner EDR.

Today is only the first of a total of four waves of students moving in to the dorms. Many of the students who were first to move in are involved with sorority recruitment, marching band, some are going to Bluegrass Community College, and others are international students.

We asked students settling in before orientation why they chose to be a wildcat.

Emily Fields from Georgia says, “It has my heart. You know, I came visited it, fell in love with it. My family’s actually from Lexington so that was a big help with it.”

Allie Stevens from Northern Kentucky says, “UK’s always just been you know the school for me, I think. You know, my dad went here for a little while and a lot of my family went here so it’s always been the school that I really wanted to go to.”

From today through next Saturday more than 5,000 students, most of them first year freshmen, will be moving in before school starts on Wednesday the 24th.
