The Center for Women and Families honored lives lost to domestic violence

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Center for Women and Families is continuing efforts to honor victims and raise awareness about the issue.

During a ceremony held Tuesday morning, the names of individuals lost to domestic violence this year were read aloud as flowers were placed on empty chairs—each representing a life taken too soon.

Elizabeth Martin with the Center says she’s seen an increase in male victims of domestic violence and notes that factors such as drugs, alcohol, and firearms often make these situations even more dangerous. She adds that when a weapon is present in an abusive home, the risk of serious injury or death rises significantly.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
