Teens Turn Education Into Cash
A new program in Lexington is proving that it pays to get an education.
"Path to Success" is a year-long program that pays teenagers to get their GED.
It also provides mentoring, and helps them develop skills and find jobs.
The program is coordinated by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s Division of Youth Services.
“For them to be able to get their GED, they can put high school and all the stressors of high school behind them and can move on to be an adult,” said Mary Alice Schrader, client assessment counselor.
A federal grant through the Bluegrass Workforce Investment Board pays $1,500 per students for up to 40 eligible teens between 16 and 18 years old.
Students can also earn $750 in a summer youth employment program, where they work alongside a professional for five weeks.
The deadline for enrollment is September 30th.
