Ted Bassett, Keeneland legend and community leader, dies at 103
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Ted Bassett, a revered figure in Thoroughbred racing and the Bluegrass community, passed away Thursday at his Lexington home at the age of 103.
Affectionately known as “Mr. B.,” Bassett served as the president and trustee of Keeneland, where he spearheaded decades of expansion, transforming the racetrack into a globally renowned racing and auction destination.
A decorated Marine veteran who earned two Purple Hearts, Bassett was also a dedicated philanthropist and community leader, advocating for numerous causes throughout Kentucky.
Keeneland’s CEO described him as a “giant in the industry” and “a beloved icon,” reflecting the deep respect he earned throughout his life.
“Mr. Bassett served the Breeders’ Cup, Keeneland, and a multitude of Thoroughbred racing industry organizations with magnificent honor and distinction, and his legacy will continue to make an impact for generations to come,” said Drew Fleming, President and CEO of Breeders’ Cup Limited.
