Teacher resigns after ‘blackface’ social media post: Newspaper
PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Kentucky teacher’s “inappropriate” comment with a racist foundation has forced her to resign, a newspaper reports.
The Pike County teacher resigned Tuesday after Pike County Schools Superintendent Reed Adkins opened an investigation after receiving information concerning the actions of the teacher at Belfry Middle School, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
“I received the picture yesterday evening and confirmed it was a teacher with our school system,” Adkins told the Herald-Leader.
The woman’s post apparently was playing off Gov. Andy Beshear’s promise to get health care coverage for every African-American in the state and eventually to every Kentuckian.
According t the Herald-Leader, the post included a picture of a woman apparently painting her face black at a bathroom mirror. It said, “Working on gettin that free health care. This should get me at least 50% coverage, right?!” according to the newspaper.
The post was shared multiple times as people discussed it, the paper added.
After she resigned, Adkins halted his investigation. He declined to identify her, the newspaper said.
“The Pike County school system won’t tolerate inappropriate behavior under any circumstances. The picture was a direct violation of our social media policy without question,” Adkins told the Herald-Leader.
