AUSTRALIA + W. Virginia (WTVQ) — Synchronized videos explains and debunks popular myth, about how toilets will swirl in different ways depending on which hemisphere.

Popular youtubers Veritasium and SmarterEveryDay demonstrated how the Coriolis effect (how the earth’s rotation effects which direction a draining whirlpool spins) is not to blame for toilets and sinks draining in different ways across the world.

However, after a two-day experiment involving a kiddie pool and copious amounts of food dye, the youtubers were excited to find that the Coriolis effect DID determine which way the water spun.

They concluded that outside influences in your tub, sink, and toilet would influence the direction of draining water far more than the Coriolis effect could, but if you felt like setting up a huge kiddie pool experiment – you could see the water shift due to the earth’s rotation.
