Swift Water Rescue At Elkhorn Creek Caught On Cam
Around 8:15 Thursday nigh one girl was stranded, by herself, on a bank of Elkhorn Creek.
The creek is moving at a much faster rate and is about three feet higher than the normal summer pool.
"Things that weren’t dangerous at a lower level or slower pace become much more treacherous at that water flow," said Kevin Hutcherson, Franklin County Fire Chief. "The rapids become much more aggressive."
Around 20 from Franklin County Fire Department, Frankfort Fire Department, and Franklin County Emergency Services came for the save. Both groups of firefighters are trained in swift water rescue.
"The power of water is unbelievable. One could think by looking at the water behind us, you could walk across it. But, that isn’t the case. It packs such a force that it’ll steal your feet from under you," said Hutcherson.
A neighbor made the call to 911 when she saw the girls in trouble.
"There was a kayak on this side of the creek and a girl on the other side of the creek," said Susan Hutcherson.
The fire chief said he was happy to help and that no one was hurt.
Hutcherson also said there’s no high-water advisory on the water but that does not mean it’s safe.
