Suspected burglars collect cash from collection boxes at Lexington church
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – It was not the typical burglary call for Lexington Police Tuesday night as they arrested two men accused of stealing cash from the Cathedral of Christ the King.
Officials say the men may have gone to great lengths to steal money from the church. Witnesses say they saw two men enter the church when it was opened for prayer Tuesday night.
Police say they were called to the church around 10 p.m. about a burglary. When they arrived on the scene they questioned two men in the area that fit the description of the two men seen going into the church earlier.
Those men, James Richardson and Steven Hawkins, were arrested and charged with burglary.
Police say there was no point of entry, causing them to believe the men may have stayed after prayer and waited until the church closed.
Court documents say the men used tools to pry open three different collection boxes and take money out.
Police say that the money was recovered.
Both Hawkins and Richardson are due in court Wednesday morning.
