Suspect in Transylvania University machete attack a former student

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Alumni weekend activities at Transylvania University are expected to go on as scheduled this weekend after a former student reportedly stabbed two women with a machete on campus Friday morning.

Police say 19-year-old Mitchell Adkins from Cincinnati walked into Jazzman’s Cafe in the admissions building just before nine with a machete and several other knives.

A witness says Adkins said, “The day or reckoning has come”. That same witness says Adkins asked someone about their political affiliation. When that person answered “republican”, Adkins said, “You are safe,” but apparently, two women were not safe. Police say Adkins stabbed them.

Soon, campus public safety officers responded to an alarm students set off, and took Adkins into custody. Mayor Jim Gray, who says he came to campus to be with students praised the officers’ efficiency.

“The response and the cooperation between Transy Police and Lexington’s Police prevented a much more severe condition from occurring and I can’t emphasize that enough,” Mayor Gray said.

The University President also says he is thankful public safety officers just did an active shooter training with Lexington Police.

“We are vigilant about safety on our campus. Obviously, you never expect something like this, but thankfully, we were prepared,” President Seamus Carey said.

One of Adkins’ victims was treated at the scene. Another, a freshman, is now in the hospital with her parents. That is where Adkins is in custody as he gets treatment for self-inflicted wounds.

Before noon, Transy’s campus was open again, but all classes Friday have been cancelled. Carey says counselors will be available for students and staff as long as needed. Police Chief Mark Barnard asked reporters not to interview them Friday, saying they are shaken.

“One came up to the Mayor and I just walking up the street and was very emotional and upset and had witnessed it so they’re still going through those raw emotions,” Chief Barnard said.

The Chief says his officers are also giving students some time. He says he is not sure what motivated Adkins, but he hopes information from students plus a look at his social media activity might bring clarity. He says the fact he once was a student at Transy could be part of his motive.

The stabbing put the whole Gratz Park neighborhood on alert Friday. Two other schools, Sayre and Saints Peter and Paul were also both on lock down.

Adkins has been charged with assault and wanton endangerment.
