Suspect in 1991 cold case to be extradited to Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A Virginia woman is expected to be brought back to Kentucky to face charges in a cold case dating back more than three decades.

According to reporting from the Lexington Herald-Leader, Kentucky State Police say 55-year-old Jennifer Cummins was arrested Tuesday in Fairfax, Virginia. She is currently being held in jail while awaiting extradition to Kentucky.

State police tell the Herald-Leader the case dates back to 1991, when an EKU sanitation worker discovered the remains of an infant inside a dumpster on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

Investigators say the state medical examiner determined the baby was born alive and healthy.

According to police, the case remained unsolved for decades until recent advances in forensic science allowed investigators to identify Cummins as a suspect. Details about the specific charges she may face have not yet been released.

State police say Cummins will be returned to Kentucky once the extradition process is complete.
