Surge continues as new COVID cases top 200 on one day in Fayette

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – After the brief plateau that was the first part of October in Fayette County is gone as the surge of new coronavirus cases picks up steam heading into mid-November.

The county reported 338 cases Saturday and Sunday, including a record 236 Saturday with another 102 on Sunday, according to the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department’s morning report Monday.

The new cases pushed the county’s total to 12,468. Saturday’s record came two days after the county recorded its previous highest day Thursday. The county has had 1,135 cases so far in November, according to the Health Department.

And the surge isn’t isolated in any one part of the community.

“Everywhere – it’s spreading in all corners of Lexington. It is widespread,” said Kevin Hall, communications director for the Health Department.

One new death also was reported, pushing the total number of people lost to coronavirus-related causes to 102.

On a positive note, another 213 people have recovered, lifting that total to 10,456.

The number of new cases among college students reported to the health department also continued to be low, although it is beginning to climb more rapidly.
