Superintendent Announces Safety Updates

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – After a month that saw a student bring a gun to school and multiple school threats, Fayette County Public Schools say they’re taking action.

Superintendent Manny Caulk sent out an email to parents ensuring them that safety is his top priority.

He says the districts added links to the STOP tip-line to the top of every web page as well as putting posters in schools to encourage students to use them.

The district adds they’ve also given out fifty hand-held metal detectors to staff and put extra law enforcement in all buildings. Law enforcement and staff will also monitor doors, especially ones not near secure areas.

Despite these measures, Caulk adds that parents need to teach their kids to use social media responsibly after seven social media threats turned out to be pranks.

“Please help us by having a conversation with your children about the appropriate and responsible use of social media and by monitoring their posts and texts,” Caulk told parents in the email.

The next meeting of the District Safety Advisory Council will be March 8, 2018 at Tate’s Creek High School. You can send them safety suggestions at advisorycouncil@fayette.kyschools.us no later than March 20.
