Summer water safety tips for parents
Goldfish Swim School in Nicholasville Rd. offers lessons
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — “It’s really important to keep an eye on them at all times,” explained Kelsi Sego the GM of Goldfish Swim School on watching your kids when they go to the pool.
With summer officially here, Goldfish Swim School is helping parents become proactive by offering swim lessons for their kids.
“We really emphasize the importance of skills like back floats. So that’s one of the most important skills that we teach here. We call it our sea otter backflips, and rollover breathing. So if a child needed to swim, but they were running out of breath, and then couldn’t make it to the edge or whatever destination they needed, we’ll teach them how to roll over onto their back, take a breath, take a few breaths and get to get rested for them to turn around and then continue swimming,” added Sego.
“Make sure your children are wearing brightly colored swimsuits. So we recommend like a neon, neon yellow key purple, orange, anything that’s really brightly colored that will help those children not blend into the water in the event that anything would happen. So that way they can be easily identifiable to parents, lifeguards, etc. Another one that we recommend is having a designated water guardian,” added Sego.
Each instructor at the swim school undergoes 45 hours of training.
Of all preschoolers who drown, 75% are missing from sight for five minutes or less.
“We also teach skills to where if a child was to ever fall in the pool, they’ll know how to get themselves out of the pool by climbing up the wall and getting out of the pool,” said Sego.
The Goldfish Swim School offers lessons everyday except Fridays.
