Study Links Fossil Fuel Pollution to Rising Frequency and Severity of Global Heat Waves

WASHINGTON, D.C. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A new environmental study has further examined the link between pollution from fossil fuel companies and heat waves.

The findings, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, analyzed 213 heat waves that took place worldwide between 2000 and 2023.

Researchers found the events became more likely and more severe during that time, largely due to the burning of fossil fuels.

Scientists concluded that major oil companies and fossil fuel–producing countries were key contributors to the pollution driving these heat waves.
