Students displaced after college dorm floods

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- It was a soggy night for some students at Transylvania University after a dorm flooded late Monday Night.

School officials say a pipe leading into one of the sprinkler heads on the second floor of Forrer Hall burst just before 11 o’clock Monday night, flooding most of that floor and part of the first floor.

Officials say in total, ten dorm rooms were damaged and seven students displaced.

The school says it is now working with students to assess any property damaged.

Luckily, Tuesday is the last day of classes for students at Transy before they’re off for Thanksgiving break, so administrators say there weren’t too many students in the dorm when it flooded, but those that were there say it was quite the sight to see.

Kaitlyn Johnson says she was at the Transy men’s basketball game when she heard the building her dorm is in was flooding.

“They were playing Centre and it was a huge rivalry game and we get on Snapchat and see that our whole dorm has flooded,” said Kaitlyn Johnson, a Transy student.

Johnson says she and her roommate rushed back to see if their room was okay.

“We live on the first floor so we like boosted her up to be able to see if your room was affected and she said ‘it’s covered, like everything on our floor is covered with water,” said Johnson.

Johnson says many of her clothes, textbooks and her computer were damaged in the flood but says she’s grateful it wasn’t worse.

“I mean we kind of laugh about it I guess, I mean there’s nothing you can do. It’s out of the schools control. It was just a freak thing that happened and thankfully there was only ten rooms that were affected and not the whole dorm and so that’s a blessing I guess,” said Johnson.

School officials say they hope to have the entire building cleaned up and back to normal by Sunday night when students return from Thanksgiving break.
