Student-Athlete of the Week: Mason Hazelwood

Meet Mason Hazelwood, a member of the Kentucky baseball team and Mercer County graduate, our student-athlete of the week.

Mason is one of the premier arms for the UK starting rotation and the southpaw was enjoying a great start to the 2020 season before COVID cut his season short. Hazelwood is currently ranked 3rd on the UK career list for fewest hits allowed per nine innings.

While he prepares for the upcoming season, Mason’s busy getting his degree in Elementary Education, where he’s at the top of his class and one of only five men in the program. He’s student teaching a 2nd grade class at RISE STEM Academy for girls in Fayette County. The Wildcat stepped on campus wanting to be an engineer but has found a new passion in teaching.

“I came in here, or came into UK as an engineer and decided baseball and engineering aren’t going to go together. Then I started think back, my grandmother, she babysits kids. I love the kids to death. On top of that, I’d do the peer tutoring stuff in high school. This is good for me, maybe I should go into this. Then I took my first few classes here and this is definitely what I want to do,” Mason said.
