Storm Chances Hang On a Little Longer… Then a Warm-Up Arrives
Scattered storm chances linger midweek before drier, warmer weather settles in just in time for the weekend.
A Few Afternoon Storms Still in the Mix Today
We’re still under the influence of that sluggish upper-level system, and it’s keeping just enough instability around to pop a few isolated to scattered showers and storms this afternoon—especially across areas east of I-65. Not everyone will see rain, but if you do, you could pick up a quick downpour, some gusty winds, and a few rumbles of thunder. Highs will climb into the mid to upper 80s, and humidity won’t be too oppressive, so it’s another pretty manageable day for early August.
Tonight: Fog Potential Returns
As skies clear out tonight and winds go calm, we’ll need to keep an eye on patchy fog developing once again—especially in valleys and low-lying areas. It could get dense in spots heading into Thursday morning, so be cautious if you’re out early. Overnight lows will settle into the mid-60s for most.
End-of-Week Pattern Shift: Drier, Warmer Weather Ahead
By Thursday and Friday, the upper-level trough finally moves east, and that opens the door for a ridge to build in from the west. The result? Lower storm chances and a bit of a warm-up. We’ll still hold onto a very slight chance of a pop-up storm (especially in southeastern Kentucky), but most areas will stay dry. Expect highs in the upper 80s both days—right in line with typical August weather—and humidity will be noticeable but far from oppressive.
Looking Ahead to the Weekend: Summer’s Final Sendoff?
It’s the last weekend of summer break for many local students, and thankfully, the weather looks fairly cooperative for any final pool days or outdoor plans. Highs will stay in the upper 80s with a bit of mugginess, and most of the area should stay dry. However, two things are worth watching: A southeastern low could toss some moisture into far southern and southeastern Kentucky, bringing a few more clouds and isolated showers. Then, a cold front from the northwest may slide toward the region late Sunday, possibly sparking a few storms.
For now, don’t cancel anything—just keep the umbrella close, especially Sunday evening, and we’ll keep tracking the timing of that front.
Wednesday: Partly sunny, a few scattered storms. Highs in the mid-80s. Wind: SE 5 mph.
Wednesday Night: Fair skies, still mild. Lows in the mid to upper-60s. Wind: E 5 mph.
Thursday: Partly Sunny, scattered storms chances in the afternoon. Highs in the mid-80s. Wind: Calm.
