State representative to introduce legislation to eliminate tax on menstrual products
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) — A state representative from Louisville will again introduce legislation to eliminate taxes on menstrual products and aid funding for those products in public schools.
Rep. Lisa Willner (D-Louisville) will unveil the bill Thursday alongside Skylar Davis, founder of Period Y’all; Tamarri Wielder, Kentucky state director of Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates; Heather Ayer, campaign coordinator of American Civil Liberties Union Kentucky; and Dr. Laurie Grimes, a pediatric psychologist.
“Kentucky students without access to period products confront significant challenges, grappling with the distressing and often stigmatized realities of managing menstruation in educational settings, which can adversely impact their academic performance, confidence, and overall well-being,” Willner said in a press release.
Last year, Willner introduced the same legislation at the state Capitol alongside Louisville students.
That year, House Bill 142 remained in the Appropriations & Revenue Committee, according to the Kentucky General Assembly website.
Kentuckians currently pay a 6% sales tax on period products.
Shoppers pay sales tax on menstruation products in 21 states, according to CNN.
