State police investigating inmate death after alleged assault at Eastern Kentucky prison

MORGAN COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Kentucky State Police are investigating the death of an inmate following an alleged assault at the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex in West Liberty.

According to state police, the incident happened Sunday night. Investigators say 49-year-old Marcus Gray was found unresponsive inside his cell.

Gray was flown to UK Hospital for treatment, where he later died from his injuries, according to KSP.

State police say a preliminary investigation indicates another inmate, 32-year-old John Thomas, allegedly assaulted Gray. No criminal charges have been filed at this time.

KSP says the case will be presented to the Morgan County grand jury for review.

The investigation remains ongoing.
