State management to end for Menifee County schools

MENIFEE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – The state’s takeover of one Kentucky school district will soon end.

The Board of Education announced at its meeting Thursday that the district would no long be under state management after July 1.

The state took over management of Menifee County Schools back in 2015 after an audit by the Kentucky Department of Education found multiple problems in areas including operational support, fiscal management, personnel administration and instructional management.

The district will remain under state assistance, which means the Kentucky Department of Education will help district officials and the school board create a plan to address any problems.

Breathitt County Schools is the only other district in Kentucky currently under state management.

Last year, the Kentucky Department of Education recommended Jefferson County Schools go under state management, which has been met with opposition.
