State investigating day care after toddler found in street

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Office of Inspector General is investigating after a 21-month-old boy was found wandering in the street near a Louisville day care.

WAVE-TV (http://bit.ly/1AsZP5W) reported Tuesday an Okolona resident was driving past Kids Paradise Enrichment Center May 15 when she saw the child in the road. After day care workers told the woman they must have left the gate open, she called Child Protective Services. The boy’s mother was informed about the incident by the agency a week later.

Day care owner Crystal McAfee says she didn’t know about the incident at first and also didn’t know the worker had an old child neglect violation from her previous employer.

McAfee says the employee was fired. She says the employee’s neglect violation did not show up on a criminal background check.
