State advises on water quality following Jim Beam warehouse fire

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The state is sending out a warning to those planning to spend time on the Kentucky River following the Jim Beam fire in Woodford County.

The bourbon warehouse, located along McCracken Pike near Glen’s Creek, caught fire late Tuesday night, destroying around 45,000 barrels of bourbon.

Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet say runoff from fire will create conditions in the Kentucky River that include water discoloration, foaming, and an odor.

The runoff is also expected to create low dissolved oxygen levels, which could have a serious impact on the aquatic life in the river, including substantial fish kills.

The state says, while recreational activity along the river isn’t prohibited, those using the river need to be aware of conditions and use caution.

The conditions in the river could also have an impact on drinking water.

According to the Frankfort Plant Board, the Kentucky River can still provide treatable water for drinking, despite the runoff from the fire.

The board says the water is being treated but says some customers may detect a sweet or bourbon odor in the water.
