Armed standoff in Rockcastle County ends in apparent suicide, state police say

ROCKCASTLE COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – An armed standoff in Rockcastle County Tuesday ended with one man dead from what state police say appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to Kentucky State Police, 42-year-old Marvin Gabbard was found dead inside his home on U.S. 25 North in Mount Vernon Tuesday night after barricading himself inside for several hours.

Troopers say the standoff began earlier in the day when officers attempted to serve Gabbard with an emergency protective order and felony arrest warrants. Investigators say Gabbard refused to leave the home, prompting a lengthy law enforcement response.

During the standoff, a nearby school was placed on lockdown as a precaution. The lockdown was lifted once the situation was resolved.

Kentucky State Police say the investigation remains ongoing. No additional injuries were reported.
