Special Olympics KY Summer Games begin in Richmond

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ)- Kentucky’s Special Olympics Summer Games kicked off Friday night at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. Crowds of cheering fans welcomed the athletes at the Opening Ceremonies.

Nearly 1,400 athletes from across the state are competing this weekend in events such as wheelchair races, swimming relays and bocce ball.

This year’s Athlete of the Year is 30-year-old Tommy Parson of Berea. He had the honor of lighting the Special Olympics cauldron as the torch made its way from the the state capitol to Richmond.

A handful of competitions were held Friday night. But organizers say the main action will be Saturday. Click here for more information.
