Special Olympics Bowling Competition Held In Lexington

One of the most popular Special Olympics sports is bowling.

Sunday, athletes took to the lanes in Lexington for the Area 8 tournament. More than 270 bowlers gathered at Eastland Lanes from counties across central Kentucky.

Winners moved on to the state tournament which is held in Louisville this December. Each year more than 1300 athletes compete in Special Olympics bowling.

"It means so much to them. Special Olympics is so much more than sports, it gives them a chance to socialize and to really express themselves and show the world, hey we are like everyone else, we love sports, we love competition, we can play sports just live everyone else," said Camille Allen, a program director with Special Olympics Kentucky.

The state bowling tournament is the largest individual sport competition.
