South Lexington 12U red all stars head to World Series

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 SPORTS) — The South Lexington 12U Red All Stars head to Branson Missouri as the Cal Ripken Kentucky state champions.

The World Series gets underway this weekend and runs through next Saturday. Teams from all over the Globe will converge on Branson for the Cal Ripken league World Series. Cal Ripken rules differ from traditional Little league rules. In Cal Ripken ball the pitcher throws from 50 feet not 46 as the little leaguers do. The basepaths are farther apart in Cal Ripken ball as well 70 feet between the bases. The distance is 60′ in Little league. In Cal Ripken ball the players can lead off, that’s not allowed in Little league. As for the  South Lexington Red team, they will be traveling in style as the leave from Lexington for their 9 hour journey to Branson, they will board their chartered Gold Shield bus at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday.  The squad is coached by former Cincinnati Reds star Austin Kearns who played in the same league as a youngster and who won the World Series himself as a 12 year old.  Kearns was coached by Donnie Warner who has coached at South Lexington for 47 years, Kearns tabbed Warner as his assistant in hopes that his son Cooper can win another trophy for the Kearns family.
