Somerset student dies after collapsing at track practice, coroner says
SOMERSET, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A 15-year-old Somerset student has died after collapsing during track practice, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.
The coroner identified the student as James Phillippe, who collapsed at Meece Middle School in Somerset on Monday (3/03). He was initially taken to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital before being transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where he died early Tuesday morning.
The coroner says an autopsy will be performed to determine why the teen passed away.
In a statement, Somerset Independent Schools Superintendent Kyle Lively expressed condolences to Philippi’s family and the school community.
“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of one of our own. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends during this difficult time. As a school community, we stand together to support each other and honor the memory of a student who will always be a part of the Somerset family.”
Officials say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
