Former teammates, Solid Blue fans and celebrities remember former UK QB Jared Lorenzen

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The man known as the “Hefty Lefty” has passed away.

The family of Jared Lorenzen announced his passing on Wednesday.

“The family of Jared Lorenzen would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for all of your support and prayers over the past six days. We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jared today, July 3, 2019. Again, we appreciate all of the warm wishes and prayers, but as a family, we would request your respect and privacy. We will offer arrangement information in the coming days. Please keep Jared’s family and especially his children in your thoughts and prayers.”

The 38-year-old was admitted to ICU last week for kidney and heart issues and an infection.

Lorenzen was born in Covington.

He joined the University of Kentucky football team in 1999, where his left-handedness and his size earned him the nickname the “Hefty Lefty.” He was the Cats’ all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Lorenzen was signed by the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2004.

Most recently, he played for the Northern Kentucky River Monsters.

In 2017, Lorenzen, weighing 500 pounds, launched “The Jared Lorenzen Project”, which chronicled his attempts at battling his obesity.

His story was documented by ESPN in July 2018.

Lorenzen leaves behind two children.

Solid Blue fans, former teammates and celebrities expressed their condolences via social media.
