World War II sailor killed at Pearl Harbor returning home

CENTERTOWN, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Kentucky sailor killed in World War II is returning home.

The Department of Defense announced Friday the remains of Navy Fireman Third Class Welbon L. Ashby, of Centertown, have been identified.

The 24-year-old was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor while stationed on the USS West Virginia.

The DOD says Ashby was one of 106 crewmen who died after the ship was torpedoed.

Ashby will be buried on May 31 in his hometown.
