Small brushfire doused before it could escalate

CLARK CO. Ky. (WTVQ) — A Sheriff Patrol found a small, spreading fire last night, near the shoreline of Lake Merwin. Police say the fire could have ignited the surrounding forest, had it not been quickly found by patrolling officers. Marine deputies assisted by PaciCorp workers were able to douse the flames before it spread.

According to Clark County Sheriff’s Office, an illegal campfire had been left unattended, and the fire spread to the dry underbrush nearby.

Forests in the area are extremely dry, says the Sheriff’s office, the perfect conditions for a major wildfire. Outdoor campfires or other burning should stay within approved campground sites.

Police ask that hazardous burning or illegal campfires be reported to 911.
