Sheriff warns of phone scam in Laurel County
LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Laurel County Sheriff John Root is warning people about a phone scam using the department’s name.
Sheriff Root says someone is calling people, claiming to be with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department, even giving bogus deputy names.
The caller claims the person failed to appear for jury duty and must pay a fine.
The sheriff’s office does not conduct its business over the phone. Any papers, court processes or warrants that are served are done so in-person by a uniformed sheriff’s deputy with face-to-face contact.
Sheriff Root reminds people never to give out personal or financial information out to someone over the phone you don’t know.
