Sheriff: Suspected meth found during traffic stop

WHITLEY CO., Ky. (WTVQ) – The Whitley Co. Sheriff says that what started as a traffic stop ended in a trafficking arrest.

According to the Sheriff, deputies stopped a car on HWY 1193 around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night when the vehicle crossed out of its lane.  Deputies say the driver, 33-year-old Ricky Smith, of Gray, failed a field sobriety test.  Deputies say that a hypodermic needle was in plain view, laying in the floorboard.  A seaarch of the vehicle revealed additional needles, digital weighing scales and small plastic bags.

Also found, in a driver’s side compartment, was about 7 grams of suspected methamphetamine.  Smith also had over $4,000 in cash on him.

Smith was arrested and charged with trafficking, possession, and other charges.  A passenger in the car, 35-year-old Jerry Smith was also arrest on a warrant for failure to appear.

Both men were taken to the Whitley Co. Detention Center.
