Sheriff: Woman arrested after giving 5-day-old newborn drug

MOUNT STERLING, Ky. (AP) – A Montgomery County woman has been arrested after authorities say she gave her newborn baby a drug which is often used to treat opiate addiction.

Montgomery County Sheriff Fred Shortridge tells local media that 29-year-old Chastity Lewis of Mount Sterling crushed a suboxone pill and rolled the 5-day-old infant’s pacifier in it.

Lewis was arrested Friday. Shortridge says deputies were first notified about the case Nov. 21.

He says the baby is still in the neonatal intensive care unit at Kentucky Children’s Hospital.

Shortridge says Lewis had been taking suboxone during pregnancy.

Lewis was being held Tuesday in the Montgomery County jail on charges of first-degree criminal abuse and failure to appear.

It isn’t immediately clear if she has an attorney.
