Sheriff: Mayor’s arrest may have been a mistake

MOREHEAD, Ky. (WTVQ) – The mayor of Morehead was arrested this week but the sheriff believes the arrest was a mistake.

According to Rowan County Sheriff Matt Sparks, the ex-wife of Morehead Mayor Jim Tom Trent called earlier in the week to say Trent violated a domestic violence order.

Sparks says he placed Trent under arrest Wednesday.

Trent then bonded out.

Sparks says Trent produced paperwork showing a Fayette County judge vacated the domestic violence order prior to the incident.

Sparks says because it was likely Trent was no longer under the domestic violence order, it’s his belief Trent’s arrest was “a mistake.”

Trent could not be reached for comment.
