Sheriff: Inmate caught selling drugs in Franklin jail

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Sheriff Pat Melton says an inmate was caught selling drugs inside the Franklin County Regional Jail. Melton says the sheriff’s office worked with the jail to set up a sting to buy the drugs.

According to investigators, Eric Collings was indicted Tuesday by the Franklin County Grand Jury on several charges, including trafficking heroin and Suboxone.

Melton says Collings exchanged the drugs for jail commissary items. The sheriff says after the controlled buys, deputies and K-9 teams helped the jail staff search the jail. The sheriff says U.K. police K-9 and Versailles police K-9 were also part of the investigation.

Melton says, “This is another way that agencies working together, benefits our community. This proves that drugs are everywhere, and we will follow up on credible leads”.

The sheriff says they’re still trying to figure out how the drugs got into the jail in the first place.

Jailer Rick Rogers says illegal activity won’t be tolerated. ”I will take every step possible to eradicate this activity, and keep the inmate population safe. If we hear of possible criminal activity inside of our jail, it will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent”.
