Shelby County gets $850,500 to upgrade sewer system serving Wieland

SHELBY COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Shelby County has been awarded an $850,500 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to construct a gravity sewer system that will serve Wieland North America Inc., the nation’s leading manufacturer and converter of copper and copper-alloy sheets, strips, foil, tube and fabricated components.

Shelby County will use the funding to construct approximately 2,300 linear feet of 12-inch gravity sewer line and manholes to support the industrial area. As a result, Wieland will create 43 new jobs and invest approximately $100 million in the area.

“Earlier this year, we congratulated Wieland as they opened the Shelby County manufacturing facility, and today I’m proud to announce infrastructure upgrades that will better serve their site,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in announcing the grant. “This project exemplifies how collaboration between local and state government and the private sector can create opportunities that generate economic growth and good jobs for our families. Team Kentucky is building a better future right now for everyone in the commonwealth, and companies like Wieland are an important part of that effort.”

In May, Wieland initially announced its plan to create 75 job opportunities with the copper and copper-alloy recycling facility in Shelby County.

The announcement came less than four months after Wieland made public its plans to locate its new North American headquarters in Louisville with an $8.8 million investment, a project creating 75 full-time jobs.
