Shaker Village teams with John Milner Architects on restoration project

HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – The preservation of two of Shaker Village’s most iconic buildings will be in the hands of John Milner Architects.

The 1824 Centre Family Dwelling and the 1820 Meeting House are part of the Restoring the Spiritual Center project, supported by a $5.1 million dollar grant from Lilly Endowment Inc.

The 24,000 square-foot Centre Family Dwelling was once the second largest structure in the state, and the Meeting House’s design includes an intricate hanging truss system that completely supports the second floor, providing unobstructed first floor worship space.

“Our firm is honored to be a part of this exciting project,” said Mary DeNadai, principal of John Milner Architects, Inc. “Shaker Village is deserving of its status as a National Historic Landmark and is a significant cultural, social and architectural resource for all to experience. We look forward to continuing our association with the organization and working together to restore these two iconic buildings.”

Shaker Village is entering the initial stages of a multi-phase effort to transform the property into a vibrant cultural resource to preserve the site’s future. Officials at Shaker Village say the initiative will equip historic spaces for new community-centered programs that ignite curiosity, expand imaginations and inspire tomorrow’s preservationists, conservationists and historians.
