CPR training hosted by Senator Wise for high school students

FRANKFORT, KY  (WTVQ) – On Tuesday, Senator Max Wise rallied supporters for senate bill 33 to ensure every Kentucky high school student has an opportunity to learn basic CPR training.
“We don’t know when one of us is going to be called upon to save someone’s life,” Wise said. “Learning a basic skill like this could possibly help do such a thing. My experience in the classroom has shown me that students have greater recall of training through the use of a practical application such as hands on training.

The bill is a major initiative of the American Heart Association. In 2011, the association released a Scientific Advisory stating that bystander CPR training and an overview of AEDs should be required for all high school students. I

CPR training is part of Kentucky’s Academic Core Standards for high school health education, and health education is a requirement for high school graduation. Even though CPR instruction is included in the curriculum, the instruction isn’t always provided. The legislation will ensure that the instruction is provided.

The bill passed the Senate on January 28 by a vote of 32 to 6 with strong bipartisan support. The bill has been sent to the House for consideration.
