Senate bill will require sexual violence awareness training

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Sexual violence awareness training would be required for medical professionals under a bill filed in the Senate.

Senator Denise Harper Angel, D-Louisville, filed the legislation.

Under Senate Bill 238, physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and emergency medical technicians would have to undergo a three-hour sexual violence-training course as part of their continuing education requirements.

The training course would cover awareness of sexual violence, including the prevalence of sexual violence in Kentucky, legal requirements, model protocols for emergency facilities, and community resources, according to Angel.

“This legislation will better educate our first line medical responders on the signs of sexual violence, which will allow them to better understand and help victims,” said Harper in a press release.

Senate Bill 238 will be heard in the Senate Health and Welfare Committee.
