Search for man still trapped under Martin Co. coal mine rubble continues

MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — The search for the second man who was trapped under the Martin County coal mine rubble continues today.

It has been more than 40 hours since the 11-story building collapsed, and crews have searched ever since.

Two men were reported as trapped; one man has been confirmed dead — the other hasn’t been heard from.

Search teams are now entering a mode where they remove and search piles of debris.

“We pick things off the pile, that is our primary search. We are going to put the debris in a pile and assign a search team to do a secondary search to make sure it doesn’t have any clues of the last known location of the victim we are looking for. It is a methodical process it is a slow process but is a process that has to take place to get into the building,” said scene operations chief Joody Meiman told ABC affiliate WCHS.

At least seven state agencies are on the scene helping with the search.

Officials stressed this is a rescue operation and “no where near” a recovery operation.
