Scott County football moving into new stadium
The Cardinals will have a true home game for the first time in 30 years
GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Scott County’s football team as well as other sports are moving into their brand new high school.
“Second to None.”
While Head Coach Jim McKee’s team practiced on their soon-to-be “old,” practice field, a crew of movers was emptying out the weight room at the old high school.
New facilities are something that everyone is energized for.
“They’re second to none and I mean that. They’re the nicest in the state, there is no second, there is no equal. There’s Kentucky, there’s Louisville and there’s Scott County High School,” said McKee.
The school’s and athletic campus’ appearances are very similar to those of the neighboring Great Crossing High School, where the Cardinals have been playing their “home,” games since 2018.
To understand why, McKee offers a local history lesson.
Home Sweet Home
“Georgetown High School and Scott County High School merged in 1975. So then there was one Scott County High School,” said McKee. “In 1995 they started the construction on this school and they tore down the football field.”
Ever since then, Scott County has never had a home stadium because the field at the old high school was not fit to hold competitions, just practices.
Between 1995 and 2018, games were played at what’s now called Toyota Stadium on the campus of Georgetown College.
Then came the second temporary field down the road at Bird’s Nest Stadium. The two are likened to a rental car by McKee.
“I’ve got a nice truck, y’all check that thing out someday. I do not want to get a scratch on that truck. I love that truck! But if it was a rental and I got a scratch I would probably try to smudge it and turn it back in without them seeing that scratch,” said McKee.
The first game inside the new stadium will take place on August 2 when the the Cardinals have an intersquad scrimmage.
