GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The man accused of killing Scott County Deputy Caleb Conley, 35, during a traffic stop in May 2023 is in court Wednesday for a change of plea hearing.
Steven Sheangshang, 47, had previously pleaded not guilty to charges including murder of a police officer, robbery, and wanton endangerment. However, during Wednesday’s hearing, he is expected to change his plea to guilty.
Sheangshang’s defense has argued against the possibility of a death penalty sentence, citing claims of mental health issues. Prosecutors, however, have questioned whether he is malingering—faking or exaggerating a mental illness—to avoid a harsher sentence.
The judge will determine Sheangshang’s new plea, which could have major implications for the sentencing phase of the case.
