School bus driver fired after dragging Louisville student

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Jefferson County Public Schools has fired the bus driver who inadvertently dragged a 7-year-old girl about 500 feet when her backpack became caught in the door.

Multiple media outlets report that driver Melinda Sanders was fired in June after her employers determined she had failed to follow proper procedure during the May 15 incident.

Louisville Metro Police says Wilkerson Elementary School first-grader Ally Rednour was getting off the bus that afternoon when the door closed on her backpack, trapping her alongside the vehicle as it drove away. Rednour was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was released two days later.

The district said in a letter to Sanders that she was distracted by talking to another student and had failed to check the stairwell before closing the door.
