Sayre football wins first state championship, finishing undefeated season
Sayre beats Raceland 27-25
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- The Sayre Spartans capped off an undefeated season by raising the 1A state championship trophy for the first time ever on Friday at Kroger Field.
Head Coach Chad Pennington’s team beat Raceland 27-25 to kick off the KHSAA football championship weekend.
Quarterback Luke Pennington threw for over 200 yards and three touchdowns to wide receiver Brock Coffman, who had 12 receptions for over 140 yards.
Running back Charlie Slabaugh capped off the scoring for the Spartans with a rushing touchdown to give his team a 27-15 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Sayre never trailed and shut the door on a Raceland comeback with just over five minutes left in the game.
The Spartans forced a turnover on downs as the Rams were halted on the Sayre 26 yard line trailing by five points.
