Russell approves package alcohol sales

GREENUP, Ky. (AP) — The northeastern Kentucky city of Russell has approved a measure that would allow package alcohol sales.

According to The Independent (http://bit.ly/1sXGPSP), the referendum passed Tuesday evening 551-336.

The vote followed a 2008 referendum that allowed by-the-drink alcohol sales in some restaurants.

Greenup County Attorney Mike Wilson had voiced opposition to the measure, but said he wasn’t surprised by the outcome.

Supporters had said approving the referendum would help the local economy.
