Rowan County couple arrested on Child Sexual Abuse Material Charges

ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)  A Rowan County couple is behind bars, facing charges related to child sexual abuse materials.

Kentucky State Police says John David Elam, 43, and Myra Patrice Elam, 43, were apprehended following an undercover Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) investigation, which began when the KSP Electronic Crime Branch discovered the suspects uploading sexually explicit videos of juveniles to an online social media account.

A search warrant was executed for the couple and their residence in Morehead on May 23, 2024. Equipment used in the crime was seized and taken to KSP’s forensic laboratory for examination. The investigation is ongoing.

John and Myra Elam are each charged with 13 counts of possessing matter portraying a minor under the age of 12 in a sexual performance and two counts of possessing matter portraying a minor over the age of 12 but under the age of 18 in a sexual performance. Possessing matter portraying a minor under the age of 12 in a sexual performance is a Class-C felony punishable by five to ten years in prison. Possessing matter portraying a minor over the age of 12 but under the age of 18 in a sexual performance is a Class-D felony punishable by one to five years in prison. Additionally, John David Elam faces one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a Class-D felony punishable by one to five years in prison.
