Man charged in deadly DUI crash in Lexington
UPDATE: Smith appeared for his arraignment via video conference from the Fayette County Detention Center. He pleaded not guilty to the DUI charges. He will have a court-appointed attorney represent him at his next court date, Friday, May 17th. Smith is being held in the detention center under a $5,000 bond. In the meantime, the crash is under investigation as a homicide, and officials say there could be more charges added.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Ronald Smith, 39, is slated to appear in court Monday for an arraignment linked to a fatal DUI incident in Lexington.
Authorities reported Smith was taken into custody after a collision on Winchester Road and Bahama Road late Friday. Investigators allege Smith was driving under the influence of alcohol when his vehicle collided with a car driven by 54-year-old Billy Williamson Junior. Police say Williamson later died at a local hospital. Williamson was a beloved graphic designer at local station WLEX-TV. According to the station, he worked there 21 years.
Williamson died of his injuries at a local hospital following the crash.
Smith remains in the Fayette County Detention Center and faces DUI charges. His arraignment is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Monday afternoon.
